RMVXP.com's Forum FAQ
Technical Issues
You have rules? What rules? Where can I find them?
Of course we have rules. There are very few forums or websites of this nature that do not have rules. This thread gives you a breakdown of what to do or what not do do on a basic, common sense scale. But you can find a link to the Rules and Regulations for RMVXP in our Navbar at the top of the forum. You can also find it linked right here.

I've forgotten my username, can you help?
It is very much possible to obtain your lost username. Just send an email to pk8[at]rmvxp.com and provide us with the email address in which you used when you registered your account. It will be by that email address in which we will retrieve your username.

I've lost my password, could you help retrieve it for me?
Available in the login screen is the "Lost Password" link. With this, you can retrieve your password and have it sent to the email address you used when you registered your account. You may receive it instantly or in a few minutes. Be sure to check both your Inbox and Spam folders for the reply. If it has been a few hours and your password hasn't arrived at all, you will find it necessary to send an email to pk8[at]rmvxp.com and provide us with the email address in which you used when you registered your account to have your password changed.

I'd like a new username, can I change it?
Yes. Send a PM to either myself or one of the administrators.

Posting
What exactly is spamming? Why can't we do it?
We ask our members to not post empty commentary incessantly, referred to as spam. This is a discussion board, not a chatroom. RMVXP is a productive game-making community forum first, and a hangout second. Most spam encountered is empty feedback (both positive or negative), dittos, and vague opinions with little to no reasoning to support them. It is typically considered to be lazy writing, and from the viewpoint of several forum administrators and staff, spam is a drain on a forum's bandwidth used for archiving an opinion of very few words. Spamming, in it's essence, is just empty commentary and nothing more.

What's flaming? What does that mean?
Flaming is posting insults at other users in the forums. As stated in the rules, don't do it. Also keep in mind that your work and your opinion isn't you. If someone doesn't think of your work too favourably, they aren't insulting (flaming) you. Same goes for opinions. People are allowed to mock the reasoning behind your opinions so long as it stays away from sweeping generalisations about anything that encompasses your persona or character. Keep in mind that being flamed does not give you a free licence to flame back. Be the mature one and use the REPORT button to get a moderator to handle it.

What's a necropost?
Basically, it means to post in a topic that hasn't had a reply in over 2 months.

Huh? What's the big deal about that?
We want to make sure that all the topics on the top rungs of the board are there because they are active and relevant. Topics that are over 2 months old are usually dead or abandoned. So therefore, whenever someone performs an act of topic necromancy, they're robbing a space from a live topic. It's more of an issue of keeping a clean house.

Is it ever okay to necropost? If so, when?
If you are the originator of a topic, then it is fine and dandy to post relevant updates to that thread. These posts may be news updates or retractions, repairs performed on an event system or script, or an update to an available resource. However, if you have a comment, problem, bug report or need support from the relevant topic and the topic has not been active within the past 2 months, we ask that you post your inquiry into the Support forum or in the appropriate forum. We recommend that you provide a link to the original topic for reference. Discussion-based forums such as Dev Discussion allows necroposting so long as the content in the new post provides a fresh viewpoint for discussion.

Double Posting seems like it's frowned upon here. Is it ever okay?
In rare circumstances, double posting is acceptable, but only when the content of the second post is truly independent of the first. It is also fine to bump your topic in accordance with the 'request forum' rules and to notify users of updates to your topics. However, you should not double post to add something you forgot to mention in your first post. We request that you use the EDIT button to rewrite and edit the first post instead. This is more of a housecleaning issue than it is a rule.

Are my eyes deceiving me? I'm seeing naughty words! Is that allowed?
To some degree, swearing is allowed. But we ask you to keep it restrained. Don't go nuts with it. Members who become 'spammy' or start being gratuitous with their swearing may receive a warning about their behaviour.

Community
How do I avoid sticking out like a sore thumb?
The best thing to do to avoid sticking out like that is to familiarise yourself with the master set of rules and the specific subforum rules in all of the boards you wish to be active. Otherwise, lurk and learn, wade in easily, provide good content and the community will welcome you with open arms.

Is it okay to tell people they are breaking the rules?
No. Use the REPORT button when you're seeing rule violations take place. We don't like members playing “moderator” on the forums. It tends to get flamey pretty fast and it makes us look like a community of brown-nosers.

People think I'm annoying. How did that happen?
Most people are usually annoyed by poor posting habits, whether spammy or aggressively flamey. Take a look at your posts for a second and consider whether it falls under the following examples. Does most of your posts contain three or fewer sentences? Does your contribution to the site consists of undescriptive resource requests, vague support topics, one liner spam posts, inconsiderate demands, rule breaking posting habits, and indecipherable/illegible text? A combination of these things is generally the reason why.

A member is harassing me via PM, profile comments and in my threads. What do I do?
Report the offending material to a moderator. We will take care of any rule infractions whether they are via PM or in public forums.

Moderation
Action was taken against me/my thread by someone whom I thought was my friend. I think this staff member hates me. Grr I hate that person! That person's not my friend anymore!
Wow! Relax! Whatever actions that were take on your account or your threads shouldn't have any sort of bearing on your friendship with a staff member. Staff members have policies to follow and rules to enforce, so please don't take it personally. And just because you're a friend of a staff member, that doesn't give you a licence to be treated favourably over others.

This staff member has it out for me!
If you sincerely feel that way, PM an administrator with your concerns or report the actions. If you go out of your way to bait and/or antagonise the staff member in question, you will likely not receive any sympathy from the rest of the forum staff.

I have a website/product/service I'd like to advertise.
You have a couple of options at your disposal. You can place a simple advertisement within your signature or you can bid on our Project Wonderful ad space. If neither of those suit you, you can try making a special arrangement by contacting one of the administrators.

I'm getting a bunch of warnings, what should I do?
We ask that you should try to familiarise yourself with the master rules and the subforum rules you are active. If it isn't clear why you continue to run into trouble, please ask a moderator to explain to you what you are doing wrong.

My account has been temporarily banned. Is it a good idea to register another one before my ban is up?
A temporary ban is a punishment for breaking the rules. Creating another account to avoid being punished is yet another rule being broken. Ban evasion leads to permanent banning of the offending account and the welcome to the forum will be removed under any name provided.

I have a friend that was permanently banned from here. Should I contact an administrator on his/her behalf?
We won't hold it against you if you do, but we generally don't overturn permanent bans. If anyone has been permanently banned, they must have a history of rule infractions or have gone out of the way to do something ridicuous.

I was warned for flaming but someone flamed me first. I was only posting in self-defence. Is this wrong?
Pleading self-defence is no excuse. If someone flames you, we want you to report the post and let the staff handle it. Exchanging insults between members typically results in a 'Flame War' and is untolerated in most communities.

I've a problem that isn't covered by this FAQ!
PM an administrator or moderator.
